Work at the Sovereign Tech Agency

The Sovereign Tech Agency strengthens critical open source software and is breaking new ground on how to secure digital sovereignty. Find out how our diverse team is strengthening technologies with societally relevance and the ways your ideas can make a difference.

Who we are

The Sovereign Tech Agency's mission: to strengthen the foundations of an open and free digital world. We see open digital infrastructure as the roads and bridges of our digital society – essential for the flow of information, for government, industry, and innovation. At the heart of this infrastructure is free and open source software, which is indispensable for a democratic society and has established itself as the world's most successful software development model. With a commission from the German Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation, we invest in critical open source software, develop programs and instruments that sustainably secure the open source ecosystem, and support the people behind the code. We are the only organization of our kind in Europe, and we are leading the way on how governments engage with digital infrastructure and open source technology. Our vision: digital resilience, technological diversity, and the safeguarding of digital public services. Together, we are shaping a sovereign digital future.

What unites us

We see ourselves as a team that is open, accessible and trustworthy, just like the software we support. We believe that open digital infrastructure is crucial not only for technological progress, but also for participation and democracy. As a small but growing team with a clear purpose, each person at Sovereign Tech Agency contributes directly to implementing our goals and moving our vision forward. Our deep experience in open source funding and our familiarity with the open source ecosystem are our greatest asset and make us flexible and effective. The team brings together diverse backgrounds from startups, NGOs, and research organizations. Together, we’re working to develop the Sovereign Tech Agency as an effective institution for strengthening digital sovereignty.

Who we are looking for

We are a diverse team and welcome applications from BPoC, people with disabilities, people with a migration background, and people from other groups that are underrepresented in technology development. We seek proactive and communicative individuals who enjoy exchanging ideas, knowledge, and experiences openly within the team. We aim for continuous learning and improvement, encouraging each individual to take responsibility for their work and personal development. Development for us means not only working on ourselves but also actively contributing to advancing the entire team and organization.
