Who We Are
Founded in 2012 by three expert hackers with no investment capital, Trail of Bits is a place for security experts to advance security and address technology’s newest and most challenging risks. The company has helped secure some of the world’s most targeted organizations and devices. Its combination of novel research and practical solutions reduces the security risks clients face from emerging technologies. This work helps drive the security industry and public understanding of the technology underlying the world.
Cybersecurity preparedness is a moving target. Trail of Bits uses a research-based and custom-engineering approach to help ensure that clients’ capabilities remain at the forefront of what is available. Companies and technologies that depend on security require a proactive and tailored approach to remain ahead of attackers.
Democratizing security information is essential. Trail of Bits provides ongoing informational support through blogs, whitepapers, newsletters, meetups, and open-source tools. Greater community understanding of security also helps people understand the value and distinctiveness of the company’s work.
Role
Trail of Bits is looking for a Senior Technical Content Editor who works at the intersection of technical editing and marketing content production. This hybrid role supports two critical functions: maintaining the quality and velocity of the security report pipeline and producing marketing content that amplifies the company’s research, tools, and thought leadership.
You will partner with the Lead Technical Editor on report editing, blog production, and content quality assurance. You will also work with the Technical Marketing Manager on campaigns, social content, and co-marketing efforts. The split will vary based on business needs, but the role is expected to begin with approximately 60% technical editing and 40% marketing content, moving toward an even split as the team scales.
You will translate complex technical ideas into clear, polished, and compelling content for security engineers and researchers. The work may include editing a blockchain audit report, writing a blog post about a tool release, and drafting social copy for a conference presentation, while maintaining technical accuracy and depth. You will work closely with engineers and researchers who perform audits and build tools, using judgment to decide when to ask questions and when to investigate independently. The goal is to surface and shape their work into content that reaches the intended audiences.
What You’ll Do
Technical Editing and Content Quality
- Edit security reports across application security, blockchain, cryptography, AI/ML, and research and engineering engagements. Ensure technical accuracy, clarity, and adherence to Trail of Bits style standards.
- Develop, edit, and publish posts on the Trail of Bits blog, the primary channel for the company’s research and thought leadership.
- Manage publication through GitHub pull requests and coordinate with internal and external reviewers.
- Manage the team’s report tracker and quality metrics systems, giving leadership visibility into editing throughput, revision cycles, and delivery timelines.
- Build and refine Claude-based tools for content creation and editorial refinement, freeing the team to focus on higher-value work.
- Lead document design beyond reports, including statements of work, proposals, engineer biographies, program overviews, quarterly business review materials, case studies, and testimonials.
- Shape editorial standards and the evolution of the style guide. Your judgment will influence how the team writes.
Marketing Content and Amplification
- Proactively identify and produce marketing content, including blog posts, case studies, social threads, newsletter sections, and event collateral.
- Own the content calendar in coordination with the Technical Marketing Manager and Lead Technical Editor. Maintain a steady publishing cadence and coverage across practices.
- Create and publish social media content across X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, and Telegram. Support community engagement and campaign execution.
- Write and edit content for demand-generation campaigns, email sequences, webinar materials, and conference activations.
- Maintain and expand the newsletter pipeline through content curation, section drafts, and repurposed content.
- Improve the writing and communication of team members across go-to-market and engineering functions. Help engineers and sales leads produce clearer briefs, stronger presentations, and shareable content.
What You’ll Bring
- Strong editorial skills: Grammar, mechanics, and style are second nature to you. You are comfortable working at every editing level, from line-level changes to structural reorganization.
- Content marketing awareness: You understand how content contributes to pipeline development and have worked on campaigns, content calendars, or marketing assets in a technical B2B environment.
- Technical content experience: You have edited technical content for accuracy, clarity, and concision in cybersecurity or another technical field. You have experience working with subject-matter experts to develop and shape content.
- Writing ability: You produce original content as well as editing the work of others. You can write blog posts, case studies, and social threads for technical and business audiences.
- Tool proficiency: You are comfortable with developer-adjacent workflows involving GitHub, Hugo, and Slack, and have experience building or using automation to improve editorial workflows.
- AI fluency: You have hands-on experience using AI tools such as Claude for content creation and refinement. You will be expected to use, improve, and build on Trail of Bits’ Claude-based editorial tools as needs evolve.
- Ownership and independence: You can work with minimal direction, apply your own editorial judgment, and explain your decisions to engineers and leadership.
Nice to Have
These are not day-one requirements, but they represent areas in which the role can grow.
- Experience with InDesign or equivalent tools for document layout and visual materials.
- Background in content production for cybersecurity, developer tools, or another technical discipline.
- Familiarity with HubSpot or a similar marketing automation platform.
- Experience structuring web content for AI discoverability and agent-ready evaluation.
- Prior work in a professional services, consulting, or audit environment.
- Experience with editorial operations at scale, including style guides, contributor guidelines, and submission checklists.
What Won’t Work Here
- Editing without understanding: The reports contain deeply technical findings. You are expected to research unfamiliar subjects, ask appropriate questions, and justify substantive changes.
- Treating marketing as secondary: This is a hybrid position that moves between editing and marketing according to current needs.
- Waiting for assignments: Engineers continuously release tools, present research, and publish their work. The editor is expected to track these activities and proactively develop content.
- Working in isolation: This role connects two teams and collaborates with engineers, product managers, sales, and leadership.
Why This Role Matters
Trail of Bits produces respected security research, ships open-source tools used by the community, publishes work that changes how organizations think about risk, and accepts engagements that other firms cannot. The opportunity is to ensure that more of this work reaches the people who should see it.
The Technical Editing function is intended to evolve from reactive editing support into a strategic storytelling function. Its goals include identifying stories from engineers, automating mechanical work through AI, expanding document design across client touchpoints, and enabling engineers to produce publication-ready content independently. The company is targeting more than 80 blog posts per year, with at least half of Technical Editing capacity allocated to strategic work and a growing share supporting non-assurance functions.
